What's this lesson all about?

Here will be a description of how anthropology approaches the topic of gender and how we teach the concept in our class.

Here is a quick vlog covering our lesson on Gender taught by Kira Yancey at TMSE in the Spring of 2018.

Gender Lesson Plan

  • Review (of last lesson)
    • C.L.A.P.: Cultural, Linguistic, Archaeology, Physical (the four subfields of Anthropology)
    • Artifact: an object/material remain made by a human
    • Ecofact: organic material with cultural significance
  • Gender
    • Name two genders: male and female
    • How can you tell someone is a boy? (ex. If you saw someone at recess who was a boy, what would they be wearing, what would they be playing or doing?)
    • How can you tell someone is a girl? (repeat same questions, leads into gender roles)
  • Gender Roles
    • Definition: rules for what is normal for how each gender should behave
    • What are some jobs that women do?
    • What are some jobs that men should do?
    • Can girls do boy jobs and can boys do girl jobs? (lead into gender equality)
    • It’s GOOD that we all know different things as long as we’re allowed to
    • IMPORTANT: Remember not to judge! We don’t like for people to judge or make fun of us, so don’t do it to others. It’s not fair.
  • Gender Equality
    • Definition: equal access to opportunities regardless of gender
    • Can women be tough and be soldiers?
    • Can men work in a kitchen?
    • Valuing that each gender has valuable abilities and can contribute equally
  • Activity Supplies:
    • Pink and blue sticky notes
    • Pens
  • Review:
    • Name two genders: male and female
    • Name a boy job. Can girls do that, too?
    • Name a girl job. Can boys do that, too?
    • C.L.A.P.
